Please find below a chart for the cash rate, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) benchmark interest rate. The chart begins in 2000.

The RBI conducts its monetary policy by raising or lowering the repo rate (reference for overnight refinancing operation with banks). The Reserve Bank of India also use the reserve requirement ratio imposed to the domestic banks as a common tool.

Since 1949, the RBI has for mandate to maintain price stability and the necessary flow of credit to the private sector.

The RBI is independent but does not have adopted a target for inflation or a precise definition for price stability. Currently, the Reserve Bank of India implicitly target a inflation close to 5% year-on-year over the medium term (index: Wholesale Price Index).
